Our Training:
At Sterling Cruising Consultants our mission is to help empower your dreams through developing people's competence in order to safely and confidently handle their new boat.

Most people attracted to sailing are drawn by a desired connection to Mother Nature. We build our teaching foundation upon understanding how Mother Nature's forces—wind and water—work upon the boat, and how to best manage them. These forces are always at work on a boat, therefore, realizing the relationship between the boat, sails, wind and water is fundamental to pleasant, successful cruising.

Along with understanding the forces at work, cruising happily ever after takes good planning, proper preparation and basic seamanship. With Sterling Cruising Consultants we get to know your ship’s systems, with you, discussing its strengths and weaknesses. We analyze safety equipment, with you, from anchors, engines and bilge pumps to fire extinguishers and all the other things you hope to never use. Of course, one can never get enough docking and close quarters maneuvering practice, especially once the forces are understood, so we put particular focus on this training.

One of the first things cruisers learn about cruising is that actual sailing is one of the last things they need to learn. We teach sailing too, but agree that weather, systems and voyage planning with charts affect the daily life of a cruiser much more.
There can be a steep learning curve to cruising depending on your boating history and life experience. Your learning process can be fast tracked with our practical, personalized training onboard your boat developed from our 20 year history teaching sailing. This will help you build the competency and confidence you desire to sail your cruising dreams into reality.
